How-to Make Simple Syrup for Your Coffee or Cocktail
Simple Syrup can be used for coffee, cocktails, added to your oatmeal, poured on pancakes, or however else you like it. This recipe is going to be a good starting point that will make you feel confident making simple syrup in your home.
Making simple syrup is actually really easy, hence the name ‘simple’. Simple Syrup only consists of two ingredients — sugar and water — Which is the perfect base to start creating fun & exciting new syrups. Take this recipe & add some spices or herbs to make your own unique syrup.
What You’ll Need
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
Steps to make Simple Syrup
Dissolve the Sugar
In a saucepan, over medium heat, mix together the water & sugar. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer once the sugar is dissolved.
Simmer for 5 - 10 minutes
Cover the saucepan with a lid & let it simmer for 5-10 minutes. The longer you let it simmer the thicker & more concentrated it will be after it is cooled down.
Let it cool
After the simple syrup has been simmering for 5 - 10 minutes, remove the pan from the stove to let it cool down & thicken.
Mix it in with your favorite drink!
That’s it! Making simple syrup is that simple! Dissolve the sugar, let it simmer, cool it down, and mix it in with your favorite drink. Store the remaining simple syrup in the fridge for up to a month in a sterile container.
Tips & Tricks
To make the simple syrup last longer, add roughly a tablespoon of vodka to the saucepan with your sugar & water.
Replace white sugar with demerara sugar (a raw sugar) to have a richer flavor. This will tint the syrup (or your drink) a little bit, but the flavor is worth it.
Don’t want to use sugar? Switch out the 1 cup of sugar for 1/3 cup of honey!
